Annie's Story, China, International Adoption

Happy 20th Birthday, Annie!

6 years ago today Sasha and I were in China completing the miracle adoption of Annie!
The Race to China started 6 and 1/ 2 weeks before Annie turned 14! At that time, 6 years ago, Chinese orphans aged out on their 14th birthday. If you arrived late- even a day after the child’s 14th birthday even because of flight issues it would have been to late for an aging out child. There was no wiggle room for any mistakes or unforeseen circumstances! That child would be forever an orphan and no longer eligible to be adopted.
We only learned of Annie about 8 weeks before her 14th birthday and sensed the Lord say “GO”!
WE HAD NO ADOPTION FUNDS, NO CLEARANCES, NO CURRENT HOME STUDY AND ANNIE DID NOT EVEN HAVE A FILE IN CHINA. At that time an average China adoption would take approximately 8 months to a year or more. Our next adoption of Brittan and Hope a year later took almost 2 years to put the miracle into perspective!
The Lord brought in every penny needed for her adoption and every necessary document and had us on a plane from D.C. to L.A. and then onto Guangzhou and finally to Changsha in less than 7 weeks time. I am not sure there was a single soul who believed we would make it to Annie on time. But God knew and urged us onward. Sasha and I arrived in her City on the 26th and adopted her officially by 5 pm June 27th and she turned 14 at midnight in the 28th.
God did it! There is no other explanation except Him.
Fast forward 6 years- what a gift He has given us in our Hannah “Annie”! The first moment Annie was placed in the van beside Ellianna, upon our arrival home 2 weeks after our finalized adoption in her city – they became best friends and sisters. Ellianna and Annie have remained best friends. God made them for one another. Annie is 4 years older and from China and Ellianna is from Taiwan but we often get asked if they are twins. In personality they are polar opposites. Ellianna is a fireball with never ending energy. Annie is calm and patient and prefers to read to being active all day. Ellianna prefers black and navy colored clothes and Annie prefers pink and sparkly! Annie cognitively is very bright but her body doesn’t want to do what her brain would like( moderate to severe cp) where as Ellianna may not walk or hear ( also cp and brain injury) but her upper body is a powerhouse with very good dexterity. Her brain injury however has affected her ability to read and learn academics. Annie helps Ellinna to sit and do schoolwork and will tell her what to cut and paste and Ellianna can do the fine motor skills. Annie has difficulty feeding herself and Ellianna steps in and lovingly feeds Annie when Annie needs help. They have developed their own type of language and can communicate very well even though Annie’s hands keep her from doing sign language for Ellianna to understand.
Annie was considered an older child for adoption and often times there is fear in adopting an older child. We can not imagine our lives without this beautiful, kind and passionate daughter of ours. She has spunk if needed and patience when needed. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and was baptized last July. She loves to read and listen to sermons on her IPad. She has a card ministry and loves to encourage others by the cards she writes. She asked for a pink study Bible for her birthday.
Annie we celebrate you today!! We celebrate the miracles God has done in your life and in ours by giving you to us in such an extraordinary way. We celebrate your 20th birthday today, tomorrow and all week.
You can help Annie celebrate by giving to those in need. The adoption of children has slowed down terribly since 2020 but there are many that are working to make a difference in the lives of children and needy souls in other ways. I do have some friends also needing prayer for adoptions that are happening but are terribly slow right now.
Annie helps in Ting Ministries by praying and writing!
She asks that in honor of her miracle adoption and her 20th birthday that you would consider a gift to Ting Ministries in her name. She will send every penny to the country that you would choose.
Here are her ministry focuses for prayer this week to which you can donate in her honor:
1. Pakistan – to complete the first ever of the Ting Homes so the Gospel will be preached to the Hindu colony where the homes are being built. $1,000
2. 120 days of feeding the Muslim children living on the streets in the Philippines $2,500
3. To build a shelter in Romania for the rescued animals who were beaten and starved before the Ting Director saved them and to fix the roof of the House of Salvation $2,000
4. To feed the orphanage children in Bagladesh $500
5. To continue Lera’s Dance for the poor village children in Russia for the month of July $400
6. To allow a group of Indonesian Ting missionaries to travel through the mountains to reach unreached people with food and the Gospel $500

Happy Birthday Annie! Thank you Annie for being a bright light in this dark world!

Happy 13th Birthday, Princess Avigayil “Tin Tin!”

Happy 13th Birthday Princess Avigayil Christina “Avi /Tin Tin”!

There are no words to express the daily agony of missing you. I have a confidence that I will see you again because of Jesus Christ. John 14:3 My assurance and my hope is because my eternal future is secure. I made a personal decision to accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

Just this week I watched a YouTube video called “Sheep Among Wolves” and attended the showing of “Free Burma Rangers”. Please look both of these up and watch for yourself. This life is not all there is – as a believer in Christ I must live for Him.

As I live without the physical presence of my sweet princess I breathe in deeply and I miss her with every breath. I remember that it was so hard to breathe without her as I waited for her before we adopted her as our daughter. Now I wait for you again on this side of heaven and it is even harder to breathe without you… AND

You are the very essence of love and you smelled of the sweet aroma of Christ. Most missed the gift you were and I am saddened for them because they missed the touch of God on this side of heaven.

We were given a gift by God Himself in you. Most don’t know that you were born from a violent act of rape upon your young 15 year old birth mother and she chose life for you. I pray every day for her healing from her pain and that one day she too will know Jesus as her Lord and Savior and she will know what a gift God gave the world through the daughter she birthed.

Everything about you drew me closer to Our Father in heaven and He continues to use your life to draw me into a deeper fellowship with Himself.

We honor your life by continuing your legacy to be a voice for the voiceless. I remember saying at Avi’s celebration service “Don’t leave this room without being changed.”

Interview: The Gulnac Family Speaks about Their China Adoption and Introduces Katie!

Meet the Gulnac family! They are a first-time adoptive family in process to bring home a special-needs daughter child from China!

A Heart for the Orphan: God’s Call to a Pastor’s Family

“We are the Gulnac family! We are blessed with two girls Lydia (10) and Madilyn (7). We feel honored that Dan has been called to be the lead Pastor of Palmyra Grace church and have been there for 1.5 years. Jessica is a part-time lab scientist with UPMC Pinnacle. The Lord works in amazing ways. Through His Word, lots of prayer, late night conversations and even the mouths of our children He warmed our hearts to another child and specifically a child with special needs. We are adopting Katie, who is about 2 years old at this time and in Beijing in foster care receiving care along with additional therapy for her condition, cerebral palsy.

                    Katie

It is amazing how God used His Word to affirm our decision to adopt in its early stages. Scriptures such as James 1:27, Ephesians 1:5 or Proverbs 31:8-9 as well as passages such as Romans 8:15-16, Psalm 146:5-9 have encouraged us. In general, I was always aware of God’s heart for the orphan throughout scripture, but being in the process has enhanced my ability to see the rescuing heart of God all throughout the Bible – you can’t miss it! And the Spirit uses each passage to remind me that adoption is a way in which we get to reflect the heart of God in our world.

God’s heart is love, especially for the least of these, the marginalized, and lost, and the orphan. As we face each challenge, every piece of paperwork, every bill, God is reminding us just how far He went to show His love toward us and we are encouraged to live out that love toward Katie. We can’t wait to bring her home and love her as our own!

The Gulnac Family – Pastor Dan, Jessica, and their daughters Lydia and Madilyn

“We had many conversations with the girls as we were processing our decision to adopt Katie. Lydia has a very compassionate heart and from the beginning was a huge advocate for Katie in our conversations and prayers about whether or not to adopt. Madilyn is our youngest and she had some concerns about another child. Completely legitimate concerns about sharing toys and such. But one night during bedtime devotions she confessed that even though it may be hard she wanted us to do this because God was calling us to do it and it isn’t about her but what He wants. It was very encouraging to see how God worked on each of our hearts individually and how He united us in our decision as a family.

We have felt absolutely supported, as many closest to us were praying for us during our discerning phase, as we sought the Lord to provide us with clarity and affirmation. We have also received support from others that have adopted or have adopted members in their family by sharing their stories of trials and hope. Lastly, some have chosen to support us financially or with donations of items we will need for Katie.

At this point in the process it would be a lie to say each step is easy and filled with excitement. However, if God is calling you to adoption – you will get to see Him show up all along the journey. Our family was blessed by the documentary “Find Me.” (If you haven’t watched it find it on Amazon Prime or Right Now Media). God’s hand is clearly over us and this process and when we pay attention we get to see Him move in mighty ways. In ways we’ll never forget. This draws us to love, cherish, and worship Him all the more.”

Flying Zhong Home – Meet 3 Sisters Bringing Home Their Brother, One Card at a Time!

Read the awesome story of the Kelley family, friends of Ting Ministries, whose daughters put together an artwork fundraiser to bring home their brother from China! Zhong is the best friend of one of their daughters who was adopted from China last year! This is their third China adoption but first adoption fundraiser – so let’s share the word and some encouragement! Check out some of their artwork below and visit their website to see more!

The Story

“Zhong’s three sisters, Grace, Ruthie & Mackenzie, have been working hard on creating a set of Christmas cards and greeting cards in an effort to help bring their new brother home! Our goal is to raise enough money for all of Zhong’s plane tickets home […] then, if the Lord wills, we can also work on paying toward all the other adoption expenses we owe and upcoming travel expenses.”

The Artwork:

“All of the watercolors & stamped backgrounds were created by Ruthie, our 13 year old, & Grace our 8 year old who has cerebral palsy (mentioning her CP as I’m super pleased with her artistic efforts despite her challenges with hand coordination) and then Mackenzie, 22, added her hand calligraphy to all the cards […]”

See the full product gallery on their website here!

“Envelopes are included. We are taking pre-orders for two weeks before printing so that we can get exactly what you want and not have too many extras of one kind or another. We will work hard to have the cards available to pick up and/or shipped to you by Thanksgiving.”

The Kelley girls are selling Christmas cards, greeting cards, birthday cards, thank yous, get well soon cards and MORE!

Guest Artist: From a Fellow Adoptive Mother, Gallery Artist, and Children’s Book Illustrator

“Cady Driver, a fellow adoptive mom, who is a professional artist in North Carolina, is sharing her prints with me to add to our fundraiser!!! She already sold enough of her beautiful watercolors on antique hymnal prints to fully fund her entire China adoption expenses, so now she wants to bless others! She allowed me to select 5 of her bird hymnal prints and is having her printer ship the prints directly to me at printing cost. Cady is not taking a dime. Cady is a gallery artist and children’s book illustrator and she wants to give God the glory for her talent and bless others with it. When Cady learned about the girls’ card fundraiser, she offered to let us also make available her gorgeous hymnal prints! These can be easily framed in an inexpensive 8×10 frame or matted or floated in a larger frame. These make beautiful gifts!

You can see more hymnal prints on their website here!

“The hymnal prints are coming from North Carolina and will take about 1.5 weeks turn around once I tell the printer how many we need…. so I should have those ready for you to pick up first week of Dec. For shipped prints, I would expect them to arrive to you during the second week of December.”

Hope and Brit are Home: If Anyone Does Not Doubt in Their Heart…

A Special Message from Stephanie Carpenter:

Here are the photos I could not share with you during our 2 year wait to bring home Hope Noelle Junjun! We said YES to this precious child when she was an emaciated child with no file and no hope. We chose to name her Hope Noelle and upon learning of her plight asked our agency to work with the director of her orphanage to not only prepare a file but to also do the finding ad that needed to be done prior to the file. We waited and prayed and began the work on the US side.

Most doubted her adoption would ever happen. Well it has and she is home – we give all Glory to God. She is an amazing little girl who turns 9 in a few weeks. We are the blessed ones. Adoption changes lives but not just the.lives of the children being adopted but it will change you. Do you want to be changed?

If you ever thought of adopting please don’t just think but ACT! You will never be the same.

Brittan Faith is now the baby of the Carpenter family. At 6-and-a-half years old, she is the size of an 18 month old. She is a precious, gentle soul that survived a lot of trauma in her orphanage – yet she is alert, watching everything and has already bonded to her new family. Ellianna has in fact, decided that Brittan is “her baby.”

After a brief stay in Hershey Medical Center for seizures, Brittan is doing well and growing quickly! Though she has multiple special-needs and delays, she is a treasure worth the world, with a face to melt any heart. How Great is Our God – the Father of the Fatherless! Thank you to all who prayed and believed alongside us during our journey!

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” Mark 11:23
