Heavy rains in Pakistan have devastated some local regions where our pastor and front line workers travel for ministry. Families’ homes have been destroyed, leaving only a pile of rubble behind. Have we forgotten what it means to trust in Jesus? Certainly, when the sun shines, when all is well in our world – then we may trust in Jesus! When the work to be done is fulfilling- then we say, how sweet to trust in Jesus!
Yet, how sad the times we think we are fulfilling the service of the Lord when in truth it be our own sense of self-importance, our own need for spiritual thrill, and not the daily duty of giving of our own resources of time or finances. (Surely, we face the temptation to tell ourselves, the illustration of the rich young ruler is just that – an illustration. A moral story, not one in which our Lord expects me to participate.)
And when the floods arise, when tragedy occurs….how can it then be sweet? How can we trust Jesus? These questions we ask when the Lord is bidding us only come to Him. This is the sweet attitude demonstrated by this well-known hymn.
There is another obedience – a walking alongside the one who suffers. This obedience is quiet; it is not one for which there is much attention. Indeed, one may not even know you are accompanying them – except as an answered prayer. How beautiful in the eyes of eternity.
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:14-17
When faced with a need, it is an opportunity for us to walk alongside our brothers and sisters who suffer. How we respond will determine the sweetness of our trust in the Lord. The beauty of walking in this obedience? If we take Him at His Word and rest upon His promise, we, through the invisible bonds of the Holy Spirit, encourage and comfort our brothers and sisters to do the same.
Thus, through our individual watering of obedience, around the world a garden of faith blooms.
